Why does the pressure cooker whistle?
A loud "wheee!" comes from the kitchen and Atto jumps. Mummy, Mauli and Papa use steam, a lid and a balloon to show why the cooker whistles.

समझThe idea
Heated water turns into steam, which takes up far more space than water. The cooker is sealed, so the steam builds up pressure. When that pressure beats the weight of the whistle, the whistle lifts and steam rushes out through a narrow hole: that is the whistle sound. Higher pressure makes water boil at about 120°C instead of 100°C, so food cooks faster.

Blow up a balloon, stretch its neck into a thin slit and let the air squeal out; then let it out with the neck open and hear the difference. An adult holds the balloon.
Keep children away from a whistling cooker, the gas and steam. Open the lid only after all the steam is out.
