A need is something we cannot live safely or manage daily life without: food, water, a home, clothes, medicine, schooling. A want makes life nicer, but we can manage without it. One thing can be both: shoes are a need, the extra price for lights or a brand is a want. Money is limited, so every purchase is a choice; what we give up is called the opportunity cost.

Give your child a small, fixed budget at the market and let them decide.
